The End is Only the Beginning

This journal entry is bittersweet. Barring some renewed funding for the new year, Christmas Eve marks the second to last day of the internship program here at GameDevHQ. While I am sad to see this program come to an end, I am also so very grateful for a lot of individuals and organizations right now. The Economic Development Alliance of Hawaii has fought hard for all participants of the Aloha Connects Innovation program to have an invaluable opportunity to learn a new skillset while getting paid. What a breath of fresh air for communities and individuals impacted financially from a global pandemic. I absolutely hope that funding can be renewed in 2021, not only for my own sake, but so that others can have an open door to what could be a beneficial and life changing path, should they have the chance to venture through it.

Jonathan and all of the staff running things hereat GameDevHQ have been absolutely outstanding. Not only did they organize all of the interns, leads, curriculum and teams, but they worked tirelessly behind the scenes fighting for not only the continuation of this program, but for individuals. The love for the Hawai’i Ohana was real and heart felt. It’s pretty amazing to see so many people, who absolutely do not have to, going out of their way to help their communities. I am honored to have been given the chance to work with so many talented and motivated people. Even though this whole thing transpired online due to social distancing measures, it sure does feel like we built a community that will continue beyond our origin point. I think once this pandemic calms down, some of us will get a chance to meet, interact and work together in person. As much as this closing chapter of my internship feels like the end, I feel more strongly that between the new friends I have met along the way, and the skills I have developed, that this phase now is only the beginning. There is still a lot of course material to plug away through on my own time, and eventually there are more games that will need building. I’m guessing sooner rather than later on the game development front.

As far as my progress on the 2D space shooter, I am happy to announce that I was able to check off every box in both Phase I and II. There is a boss at the end that is pretty tough to beat is it turns out. I customized my title screen and changed the default game name to “Lost Galaxies: Homecoming”. I thought it gave the impression that maybe this would be a series of games. I wanted to make a playthrough video showing me get through the boss fight, but I had too much difficulty and was unable to finish to the end. I remembered having trouble with my enemy shields previously, where I was making my enemy invincible via a shield that takes no damage. I went ahead and temporarily implemented this on my player script in my damage method, so I could get a nice playthrough video using my first dev cheat. I will attach a video of the playthrough, even though there is a short list of items I want to come back and clean up. I think this will be a good demo project to keep building and experimenting with. Maybe eventually I will seriously expand it into a more interesting and longer game. For now, I am happy with the progress I have made so far in the course work, and I am excited to dig into the cinematography section. I am so very grateful for everyone that gave me such a life changing opportunity. I will do my best to continue developing my new skill set, and work to grow with my new found Hawai’i GameDev community.

I am an artist and musician, that is currently diving headfirst into game development with C# and Unity3D.
